Homecoming was Friday of this week, which means that we technically didn't have a workday. However, several of our members still found time to come out and work in the garden. The tasks this week included putting up a trellis to support our cucumbers, tying up our tomatoes, replanting some peppers, and weeding our plot.
The trellis used to support our cucumbers will help to keep the fruit off of the ground, making it less accessible to pests, and less susceptible to rotting caused by excess moisture.
The low tunnel is doing a very good job at keeping the Florida heat off of some of our cool-season crops. The cabbage, arugula, and pac choi planted in it are looking great!
We used two stakes and string to tie up our tomato plants. As they get taller, we'll add more tie points so that they stay upright and don't collapse under their own weight.
The Padron Hot Pepper seedlings we planted last week didn't do so well, probably because they were too tiny. This week we tried again, as the transplants had nearly doubled in size while in the greenhouse.
As our plants get bigger, we will put down hay around their bases. This will suppress weed growth, and reduce soil temperature - very important for the cool season crops we have planted.
