In our plot today we are removing our cucumbers, Due to the cold front that has hit and some bacteria that has effected our plot we have decided to remove them. We are sad to see you go cucumbers. This semester we produced many cucumbers that we have really enjoyed. We pickled them and even added them to salads.
High Tunnel
Recently we put up high tunnels. These tunnels will function as a place to grow strawberries and protect it from the cold that is coming. How this works is by the plastic allowing sunlight to come during the day and trapping the heat for the night. So as the temperature drops during the nigh the high tunnels stay far warmer. The other thing it helps with is weeds. Weeds can't get through the plastic and are constricted to just the two openings. Obviously these are not permanent fixtures because they are made with cheap plastic and not help together with glue.
Fuzzy bee
Our peppers are being pollinated by a very fuzzy bee. Our peppers are doing great and we are gonna have bell peppers soon. Our tomatoes however are soon to die. We are under the impression that the tomatoes were infected with some type of virus or we just has poor management. Our garden is doing well and does need weeding but we are very happy with it.
Cabbage is growing
Our cabbage is growing. The bud is growing and the older leaves are falling off and the new leaves are growing. I learned today that cabbage grows in bulbs and they need cold temperature to be mature. We fertilized and had hay put down on the path to prevent weeds. I am very excited to have cabbage in our garden. I don't know what I will make with it.
Curly Cucumber
The cucumbers were growing well till we realized that the cold had effected them. We also thought it was because of the wind but then came to the conclusion on a virus because other cucumbers in the plot around us were doing fine. I was very excited to eat cucumbers but this species is very odd to me. They are very spiky and taste just like regular cucumbers but do have an odd shape.
Low tunnel
The low tunnels are perfect for our veggies that prefer a little micro environment. In our our low tunnel we have bok choy, cilantro, and many other veggies. This week in class we learned why we use low tunnels and high tunnels because they are cost effective and the uses of them. The low tunnels however are kinda hard to manage because they are so low so they do make it harder to manage it. The high tunnels are better because you can grow more fruits and veggies that are bigger.
